Before I got into coaching high schoolers for the first time, plenty of my friends with coaching experience gave me plenty of horror stories about what it would be like dealing with the player's parents. Luckily, for the most part, the parents that I had were great. There were a few sporadic issues throughout the season, but nothing major. After coaching, I moved onto working in the field of college baseball recruiting, which a completely different level of dealing with high school baseball parents. Between the two experiences, I have certainly developed a solid list of do's and don't to help parents out with following their young athlete, and hopefully assisting him in advancing to the next level, whether it be as a collegiate student athlete, or even as a pro.

As a coach, I really only had one rule for the parents, and it was rule I stole from my high school coach who now coaches a DI in Florida. That rule was, "you can talk with me about anything except playing time. If playing time enters the conversation, the conversation is over." For some reason, when a player does not start or play an entire game or play their position of choice, a parent can twist this into the coach having an "agenda" against their child. That is almost never the case, especially the higher up you go. When coaches are paid to win games, they are trying to do just that. Sometimes a player may be in a slump, sometimes a coach plays a matchup, sometimes he may simply feel another player is better, but it is almost never because the coach doesn't like a given player or parent. Keep in mind that a good coach will communicate to his players why he makes a certain decision, and what they player can do to improve and get more playing time. Invariably, players understand these things better than the parents. Here are few other general principles to go by:

o Be seen and not heard - Especially at games. Cheering on the players is the best thing you can do. Yelling at a player, coach, or umpire is not going to have a positive impact. Don't coach every pitch from the stands. Players become distracted by what their parents are up to in the bleachers and it absolutely affects their play. Practices are the time for coaches to be vocal, games are for the players.

o Don't try to "pitch" your son to a high school or college coach -- It is extremely difficult, if not impossible to view your own son's play objectively. That is for the coach to do! If your son has talent, the coach will see it. That is what they are paid to do. Believe it or not, coaches see just about everything that happens on the practice or playing field and it doesn't take long to get a feel for a player's skill set.

o Coaches aren't perfect - Keep in mind, that coaches will make mistakes. I do realize that many coaches carry themselves as if they don't, but I can speak from experience and say I have mis-evaluated a player, especially early in the season. Some times a player simply improves, but sometimes he may have been better than the coach thought all along. Either way, coaches will usually correct their error and adjust the lineup accordingly. Even if they wont admit they were wrong, the lineup will show it.

o Be careful when you "angle yourself" in - Many parents volunteer their time to help with practices, concessions, scorekeeping, etc. Be sure that if you do this, you maintain the proper boundaries with the coach. Often times, parent that have additional responsibility feel it is acceptable to overstep and volunteer their input on how the team should be coached.

o Encourage and empower! - As much as a parent wants to help because they know best, whether it be on the playing field or in the recruiting process, the ultimate goal is to make the player self sufficient as a young man. If a player wants additional playing time, or wants to play a different position, he should simply go to the coach in private and ask what he needs to do to accomplish that goal. This will go miles longer than if it came from a parent. If a player shows the initiative to stay after a practice and do the extra work, coaches will reward the good example if possible so that it is seen by other players. You also want to empower your son when it comes to the college recruiting process (there will be following articles on this). Many parents feel this is their time to get more involved, however, a player is perfectly capable of initiating contact with college coaches by phone or email. In short, do your best to empower your son as a young man and high school athlete. Work with them to develop their skills, but don't be overbearing. Teach them to carry themselves with proper etiquette and work ethic, and when in doubt stay out of the coaches way. Ah yes ... Words of great wisdom indeed. Why I am recalling that line while choosing to write about my days of yore, could only mean I have something to confess. And to this poor, sweet lass, who has genuinely passed the test of time with flying colors and moved on with her life, I sincerely apologize. Now, where do I start after that opportunity line? From the beginning, I presume.

The summer of 1980. I had my license for over a year now and had done my best to do what damage I could to Mom's car and even my grandparents' car. This was a malicious act with the intent that if I did enough damage to theirs, they'd think letting me buy one of my own. I was a working lad, after all. I needed to get from to and fro and had to have transportation. It was the clear choice. I don't recall how we found her; a 1970 Plymouth Satellite with 23,000 miles on the odometer. So I drove the Satellite home and had all kinds of visions and adventures were going on in my head. Summer was arrival after all and after last summer at the beach, this year was going to be even better. Why? Because now I had my own ride! Beer, babes, and beaches, oh my! What a astonishing world we lived in back in 1980. Bad hair, music trying to leave the inevitability of changing from the 70s and, the residual corduroy bellbottom pants. We were entering the disco decade. Eh gad. Somebody hit the brakes! If I knew then what I know now ... I probably would have knocked up some young lass and be in worse shape now than ever before. Thank goodness the world works in mysterious ways.

So ... We've covered "Freedom." everybody understands that cars are relaxation to young lads. Now ... Let's talk about the French. My dear grandmother is French Canadian so let's get that out in the open before whatever accuses me of racial slander. I have nothing against the French. Hell, I'm part French and I kiss French and I eat French Fries ... So bite me if you think I'm a racist. Sorry. Obviously, I still have some pent up issues to deal with. To say what I'm about to will involve Old Orchard Beach at the same time as explaining about the French. In the summer time, at least from days ago, the French Canadians would flock to the stateside beaches of Maine and one of their beloved haunts was Old Orchard Beach. The prior summer, we had experienced this newfound treasure being Coasters of New Hampshire, by a fellow relaxation Driver a year older than us and already adequate with his drivers license who opened a whole new avenue of unexplored territory in the female gender to us. French chicks in the thousands. Oo-la-la!

There was one singular week and I do not recollect who went and who didn't. I may not even have driven that singular night ... But I remember it was night time when I met her. Why I can envision her so clearly and not recall her name is beyond me ... And you'll come to understand why as I unblemished this tale. She was small framed but built well, with fair eyes of bluish green and long, light brownish colored hair. I walked past her in a crowd and turned to see ... Her other profile ...and was elated to see she was doing the same to me. I smiled the international language. She returned the gesture. I can't remember if we talked right then or rediscovered each other again later. Too many years have come and gone, too many cobwebs cluttering the attic of my memory. I remember ... Suddenly sitting on the beach with this girl. She smoked Canadian cigarettes and she knew I didn't approve. Although if she had had a Columbian cigarette, I would have toked with great earnestness. But her beauty, although maybe wouldn't have won any pageants, to me she was drop-dead gorgeous ... She spoke broken English ... Very broken and the only French I knew was the kissing kind. It was a match made in heaven ... For the summer that is.

The next thing I knew, we had decided to walk the park again, and to whatever who knows what Old Orchard Beach is about ... It's an amusement park chock full of aged arcades and a boardwalk and amusement rides. When you're young, it feels so enormous. Getting older and revisiting it one day later on in my life, I couldn't believe how small it genuinely was. How ... Divey it seemed to be ... But the days of yore had ways of changing what you experienced. They were truly magical, those days. This beach is genuinely unchanged from the test of time, and yet the comparisons from then to now are worlds apart only by imagination. That's magic, people.

Walking down a clear street, I noticed a young lad who appeared to be following us. She was perplexed with me and did not notice. Young love. I took consideration and waited for the right moment. I could have been wrong, so I paid an ounce of extra attentiveness and sure enough, this unknown creep was stalking us ... Maybe her. I will be her hero, I notion and waited for a target of opportunity. The stalker spoke. She did not hear. I did. We kept walking and she kept looking at me ... Why was she so engrossed with me? Hell ... I was just an mean guy and she didn't even know I had a car yet! He said something subtle again and walked a tiny faster to catch up to us. Again, she did not hear him. Was she choosing not to? Was this her boyfriend from Canada? We did genuinely suffer from a language barrier, but all we needed to genuinely do was look into each others eyes, start kissing, and who the hell needed to talk anyway? Am I right? We both spoke French when we kissed, so who cared. Anyway ... This kid, a behold from the corner of my eye ... You see, I didn't want her to think whatever was diverting my attentiveness from her ... A helpless romantic ... And she bought and paid every cent; plus tax where applicable ... Until he moved just close enough behind her, and I lunged her considered into a storefront ... Done for the evening, guarded her by standing in front of her, and grabbed this stalking tiny bastard by the neck of his T-shirt to let him know ... He just made a huge mistake. She's with me, bucko. Ask a demand and put in order to meet you maker!

"Daniel," she said, but pronounced it Danielle. French people. She looked at me with the utmost affection for my heroic deed, but there was something else in her eyes ... Something I didn't quite understand yet desperately tried to. Her mind raced to find the words in English to make my density perceive her. "My brother," she said finally in the most alluring French accent I had ever heard in my life. Daniel smiled a goofy smile and I think I caught him praying to St. Anne De Beaupre that he was still alive after the brief incident. I extended my hand and he gladly shook it. He said something to ... Her ... Why can I not remember her name and yet know what her brother's name was? I didn't French kiss her brother for crying out loud?! Weird. Nonetheless, they talked briefly in a foreign tongue that I did not need to understand and he bid me farewell and I him. The rest of the night was hers' and mine. We sat on the beach again later, kissing under the stars while listening to the waves crash against the shore. Her mouth tasted of stale cigarettes, but her passion was undeniable. My exertion of heroism to safe a girl I barely knew, even if it was to her smaller framed and obviously weaker brother, paid dividends and left this poor French girl reeling.

I had walked her to her motel and bid her farewell. I would never see her again, I thought. I'm not sure what she was thinking. Next thing I knew, me and my local homies were all regrouped and on our way home sharing our stories of conquest. For some reason, and this is a true testimony ... They all witnessed me meeting her after all ... But I remained humbly silent and told them I had a good time with her and left it at that. They were all so willing to kiss and tell their own stories, that mine was suitable and forgotten. She was gone ... And she left this hollow pit in my stomach and after arriving home that night and falling asleep, I dreamt of kissing her and crashing waves on the beach in the darkness.

I woke up. It was morning. Something still didn't feel right. All I wanted to do was see her again. But even as small as Old Orchard Beach was, I would never find her again. I could never find her again. Could I? I ate morning meal ... And notion of French. I took a shower ... And notion of French. I told everybody in my house that I was going for a drive. I drove alone to Old Orchard Beach. I had to find her. I would find her. I knew where her motel was after all.

After arriving and parking my car, I made my way across the park and past it to the streets where the motels lined up on Atlantic Avenue. Route 1. I stood in front of her motel and the strangest revelation came over me. I wasn't nervous. Every time before this when I had to call a girl, even if I knew she liked me, there was this odd sense that maybe I was wrong ... That created this ... Fear of rejection deep, down inside me. But not now. I had only met her brother and if I knocked on that motel door, I was clear to meet her parents and other family members. But for some reason, I wasn't nervous. All that was in my head was this undying urge to see this girl again ... And when I knocked and her brother answered the door ... And the door opened wide enough for her mother and father to see face ... To see me standing in front of their motel door ... And smile at my arrival ... Knowing how excited their daughter would be to see me ... Knowing how excited she would be to see me there this day ... Man ... My head was reeling! They had suitable me. They didn't even know me. But she came flying out of the bathroom, freshly showered and her hair was still wet. She wore shorts and a white T-shirt with a bikini underneath. She kissed me in front of her parents ... Not French, but her parents smiled and was happy for their daughter. She told them we were leaving for the beach ... In French ... I didn't understand anything. I was lost in a world of wondering what it was about this girl ... Other than her good looks that had me feeling this way ... That had me suitable in her world. I was going with the flow. My god ... I was in love with her. Was that even possible?

We spent the entire day together. straight into the evening until just about the same time as we had the former night. It was time to go again. I felt empty. Hollow. Lovestruck. For godsake, someone help me! We kissed passionately and I told her I was leaving and probably wouldn't see her again. Maybe next summer. She was only there for the remainder of the week and would be going back to Canada. We were worlds apart. Long length relationships didn't work especially at our age and we both understood that. I left again. Again, I had this sinking feeling about this girl. Why? I can't even remember her name for crying out loud! Shame on me for that.

This time I let a day go between us. After I awoke the next morning, I sat in the living room and watched an interview with Stephen King on Good Morning America. He was on some beach with Joan Lunden and it looked vaguely familiar. She asked him questions and he answered them. And then ... Right before a market break ... She dared to say it. "Good Morning America, here with Stephen King live from Old Orchard Beach." I screamed. There was no way I could make it ... Not now! He'd be long gone before I got there ... And then what? Her, you idiot! That's what! I didn't even genuinely care about Stephen King. Maybe a little. But it was her and hearing those three words ... Old Orchard Beach. Oh my god. I felt like puking. I had to see her again. I couldn't let her go. I hadn't told her that I loved her. I couldn't tell her that I loved her. That would not be fair to her or me. After all, inevitably, we could never withstand the test of time. Too much high school was still left. We lived worlds apart. I stayed home that day and simmered in a pot of my own self inflicted misery. I was depressed. I yearned to be with her and even though when we were together we spoke so tiny to each other due to our barriers, it was our eyes and what we saw in each other that truly was the only language that needed to be spoken.

I couldn't take it. It was Friday when I woke up again and she'd be leaving in a day or two. To Canada until next year ... And god knows if or when I'd ever see her again. I wanted one more day with her. I showered and skipped morning meal and drove straight to Old Orchard Beach. The same knock on the same motel door produced a mother who smiled again when she saw me. In a thick French accent she said, "She's gonna be so glad to see you. She's on the beach." I thanked her and headed for the sands. She was sunbathing and unsuspecting. She looked so erotic ... So exotic ... So much like a tourist. I snuck up on her. I recognized the hair, the contours of her body, those lips ... Despite her donning sunglasses ... She was stunning. Sweat and tanning lotion had glistened exposed parts of her body and I stood there and took in the few moments to navigate the scenery in silence before I announced my arrival. What an absolute dish. A sprig of parsley on the side was all I needed to go with this entrée.

Within the ocean breeze and the crashing waves, I uttered her name ... A name I wish for the life of me would return to my memory banks ... Did I just fantasize this poor girl? She looked up and tipped her sunglasses down towards me. Her face was both in shock and happiness. I had seemingly answered her unheard beckon call. Maybe she had some spell over me ... I don't know. She was elated and leapt up from her beach blanket and embraced me. Stephen King was sitting here 24 hours ago, I notion briefly to myself as I hugged her back ... All glossy and sexy. Again, we spent the entire day together well into the late evening. This would be genuinely the last time we got to spend together ... At least this year, but our love for one other had grown from a mere passing and consideration that the other was checking each of the other out ... Like window shopping at the mall if you will, and there He or She is and how good they would look wearing the other... Into ... This unpronounced love with greatest barriers and length that threatened every ounce of its existence. It could never work. We were too young. It would never work. End of story.

Sitting on the darkened beach again that night, we stopped kissing in time for each to catch our breath ... Content with listening to the unseen waves crashing in the near length and I saw her head flicker towards mine and she said it in the darkness. "I love you, Jody," she said. I stupidly smiled and looked out at the ocean as if I could see it. She saw me smile. She knew I chose not to return her devotion. I did love her, there was no doubt. The realization that our love would never last consumed my behavior and left me blank. She said it again to confirm I understood her in her accented English. I silently grabbed her hand and pulled her head onto my shoulders and embraced her ... Still not returning her devotion. What she must think of me ...

As time passed, the night grew old and it was time to go again. I had a long drive home alone and this by far was the best day that I had spent with this elusive French girl. We exchanged addresses. Pen pals. She gave me a puca-shelled necklace to remember her by. I took her to my car ... (shut up) ... I had to have something to return in gesture. I was always a writer of sorts ... Self proclaimed ... Whatever. My ex-girlfriend from last year had written a story and I had told her I would rewrite her idea and give it to her. She was not a writer ... And had no qualms about not being one ... Her story was self proclaimed as "stupid." It was kind of, too. But I rewrote it with her intent and she was somewhat offended that I might take her unintelligent story and do a best job with it. Women. And there that story was ... All hand written our and crumpled up in my glove box where she made me put it after refusing to read it. It was right next to my Ray Ban's. I wouldn't need those tonight ... I notion with a sudden case of insanity. Hey ... I love you French girl whose name evades me, but those are Ray Ban's, honey. Here ... Take these crumpled pieces of paper with a story in it and remember me. She did and expressed how thrilled she was. Did she even consideration the Ray Ban's? Ah ... Too long ago.

I left and genuinely mustered the urge to cry over her that night on my way home. I would genuinely never see this French girl again in my life. Not next year or the year after that. Never again. She was but a mere chapter in a book with many others written about my life and her existence was but three days worth of encounters long. She was lost ...

Well ... Not exactly ... Quite yet anyway. School started, I met other girl ... And the French girl wrote a pen pal letter. I responded nicely ... Somehow that feeling in the pit of my stomach when she wasn't colse to ... The way she would look into my eyes ... The expression on her face when she did ... All dissipated in my memory ... As obviously did her name ... Poor, tiny French girl. Heavily complicated within other association ... One of which I reached an entirely different base with other game of exploratory baseball, I had tired of the puppy-loved, long length association with ... Whatshername.

Another letter arrived and I ignored this one too but suddenly came up with a fantastic plan. Recruiting the aid of my sister to retort a brief letter back to her in a women's handwriting ... I produced, directed, and starred in a brief eulogy of my own demise. We sadly reported to the French girl that I had been killed in an auto urgency in my mother's alleged handwriting. We told her how much I had mentioned and notion of her and how sorry (my mother) was and that she need not write any more letters ... To a dead guy ... And guess what? Uhuh ... She mailed a frickin' condolence card addressed to my mother ... Of course, which I had to explain. My mother wasn't happy ... And neither was the French girl, I'm sure ... But I moved on. Or did I? I often think of this poor, French girl and the anguish of which I might have caused her. Did she cry over my imaginary death? Was that fair of me to make someone do? So ... My past actions do genuinely haunt me sometimes and I am truly afraid they will catch up to me ... And the price is greater than I could bear. Please, French-girl-whose-name-evades-me, forgive an old man who was once in love with you and was young and foolish enough to make such a unintelligent decision. I'm sure you're obviously best off without the likes of me and my conniving ways.

The Chevy Chase Inn Treasure - settled on Port Discovery Bay, in the Straits of Juan de Fuca. In 1864, the Canadian Pacific compel was robbed of ,000
in British gold sovereigns. The hoard was then buried on the asset of the old Chevy Chase Inn.

Setting Up In-House Retail Sales

Now, that you are familiar and likely connected with online
music sales sites, such as CD Baby, or combination
online/offline retail sites, such as The Orchard, you are
probably comfortable in having your music distribution
and sales fairly covered.

But, what if you could get even more music sales, and
even more profitable income?

I'm speaking of consigning your product to retail stores,
but, with one exception...consigning your product nationally,
or even internationally.

For all concerned, "consignment" means placing your
music in retail stores on a trial basis, then collecting
payments when it sells, with the retailer keeping a portion
of your sale.

You see, as consignment goes, most musicians who
consign their music to retailers, usually limit their
consignment territory to only local retailers, or on a
regional level at most. Their reasoning is that any larger
area will be too difficult to manage.

But, that is simply not so, and they are losing a fantastic
amount of money by limiting themselves to their local
regions.

So, I am going to show you how you can easily consign
your music to retailers and be able to collect payments
for sales every thirty days (or so) via a "step-by-step"
process.

It is important to note that the consignment process will be
most successful if you are already receiving some degree
of promotion and publicity results, such as radio airplay,
press coverage, video airplay or through your music
being played in nightclubs via record pools, of which I
have addressed in a previous article.

Otherwise, you may find your ability to move your product
from retailers' shelves almost as difficult as if you did not
have product on them. And, if you do not have some
degree of promotion or publicity, whether you have hired
such a service, or you choose to conduct it yourself,
practically, the only way that you will experience sales is
purely by retail customers' accidental discoveries of your
music.

So, ready?

1. Concentrating on retailers (both major chains and
independents) in areas where you are getting radio
airplay, video airplay, press coverage or any other form
of promotion or publicity, contact retailers in these areas
who your distributors may not service. One of the best
up-to-date online sources to use, particularly, for the U. S.

This is the online version of the Yellow Pages, and you
should look in such categories as "Compact Discs,"
"Compact Disc Retailers," "Music Retailers" or similar
categories.

2. You may prefer to visit local retailers in person,
introduce yourself and make them a consignment offer,
such as the amount that you will need from each unit sale,
etc., and how often you will need to collect payment for
any sales (usually every thirty days is the normal time
frame). Retailers will also expect you to make a written
agreement available to them that spells out the terms of
the consignment.

3. As for retailers outside of your local area where you
are already getting promotion or publicity, you can simply
contact them via telephone and relay the same information
that you do with local retailers in person.

In both cases, you should direct them to your website,
whereby hopefully, you have your music streaming for
them to listen, as well as have a bio and other important
information regarding you and your project.

customize with your own information, then upload to your

4. Once you have uploaded your customized version to
your website, your retail accounts can then simply
download it from your site, or you can fax a copy to them
if they prefer.

You will also note that I have included discounts for
retailers within this 1-page form that are designed to
dramatically reduce the number of returns that are a
commonality with retail consignment and distribution.
The less returns, the more money you make (and keep).

Additionally, you will see where I have limited the number
of units to five (5) at any given time. This is to ensure that
there are just enough copies that should sell with no
problem within a 30-day period, especially, if you already
have promotion and publicity occurring in the retailer's
area. This limit also ensures that you have enough
product to reasonably service enough retailers.

Also, with this limit, re-orders are more likely to occur
before the end of your 30-day periods. This type of retail
activity looks really great to traditional distributors who,
after seeing your product's retail track record, may contact
you to inquire about carrying your product. This will give
you stronger bargaining power with them, as well as wider
distribution, than if you did not have retail product available
and moving.

And, even if distributors do not call, this will allow you to
approach them with an attractive sales history and track
record.

Also, be sure to provide local retailers with two copies of
the consignment form to sign (carbon paper between two
original copies still works) so that both you and the retailer
have copies.

5. As for retailers outside your area, or local retailers that
prefer to use the online consignment form, be sure that
they download, sign and either fax or mail the form to you
*BEFORE* you send them product. This creates an
initial record and verification of a purchase request. You
then, in turn, sign the form then return a copy to the retailer
along with his order.

6. When sending retailers product, be sure to *ALWAYS*
send your product via some shipping/tracking method. I
would, personally, use the Certified/Return receipt service
with the U. S. postal service, and I believe that the U. S.
postal service also now has tracking for 2nd Day
Air/Priority mailings as well.

These particular services are probably the least
expensive services on the market, but they will ensure
that your product doesn't get lost or stolen en route to the
retailer. They also ensure a record of the retailer having
received your product for those few unscrupulous retailers
that may not wish to pay for your product if they received
it by first class mail, but would sell it and keep its profits.

7. At 30-day intervals, contact your retailers, whether in
person or via telephone, to inquire of any sales that have
occurred. While you can pick up payments locally, you
should have distant retailers forward you a check for
payment that corresponds with the number of unit sales.

You could also have them pay you online via a credit
card through PayPal, or another such online service.
This would eliminate lost/stolen checks through the
mail, while guaranteeing your payment quicker.

8. If, for example, within a 30-day period, you have three
sales, with two unsold units with a retailer, you have the
choice of either waiting for the remaining two units to sell
prior to forwarding more product to the retailer, or you can
offer to forward three more units to the retailer. However,
it is probably best to wait until the two remaining units sell.

9. In either above case, once all five units have sold at
any given retailer, begin the complete process over,
starting with the retailer signing or faxing another copy of
the consignment form in order to ensure accurate sales
records and sales continuity for your project.

Note: Should your project begin to experience a large
sales volume, you may wish to hire someone, i.e., a
student or intern, to work this aspect of your project, and
whom you can pay a commission for each sale. This will
eliminate your need to pay hourly wages or salaries, and
will further save you money.

Have family members set summer goals. For example: list of books you want to read, things you want to do, places to visit, skills you need to learn. Take your child to the library and sign up for a summer reading program. Have your child help put together a first aid kit that can go with you on your many summer outings. Give your child an inexpensive camera and let them take pictures of all the fun activities you do over the summer. Create a scrapbook of memories. Welcome to the gorgeous Shenandoah Valley, the breadbasket of the South. Our resort, Skyline Ranch, is nestled in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Mount Massanutten, near the town of Front Royal. The town got its name from Revolutionary War days. The military mustered in front of the Royal Oak tree, which stood in the town square. This is a great starting point to visit this historic region heading North to Maryland and South to North Carolina.

Philip Sheridan heard the battle being waged from fifteen miles away in Winchester. He mustered his cavalry and road to aid the Union forces, which were being routed at the time. He changed the policy of the battle. This was the last major battle in the Shenandoah Valley. The Csa lost their breadbasket and finally the war.

Hupp's Hill, along route 11 was a pivotal vantage point. Because of its strategic location and height, it became the headquarters at various times of both the Union and the Confederacy generals, while in the area. Today a museum occupies George Hupp's house, which was there. It is dedicated to Stonewall Jackson's campaigns in 1862. This is a miniature gem. Displays description the events in chronological order and handouts give detailed accounts of the various battles. Covering is a trail, which winds among the entrenchments, gives various views of the fields on which the battle was waged.

The battlefield itself is secretly owned, but works in conjunction with the Nps. Reenactments occur annually colse to October 13. More than 7,000 re-enactors participate in the event. Agreeing to the operators of the park, re-enactments of the Second Battle of Manassas are also going to take place there in the future (The are not allowed in National Parks).

Today we followed the trail for the Battle of Front Royal a.k.a. As the Brother against Brother Battle. This pitted the 1st Maryland Usa against the 1st Maryland Csa. The Usa military held the town. What they did not know that Belle Boyd, an eighteen-year-old resident, was also a spy for the Csa. When she heard that Jackson was camped Covering of town, she overheard the plans of the Union and ran to tell him the information. The battle was one-sided.

We took a walking tour of the town too. Belle Boyd's house is open for visitation. A docent gives a tour of the four-room house, in which she lived and tells the story of her adventuresome live. She was a very feisty and colorful woman. The Historical community has its offices behind the customary house. Next door is a museum with exhibits of the history of the area. Front Royal was a Pow Camp for the German Hessians While the Revolutionary War and later While Wwii. Many German immigrants had settled in the Shenandoah Valley in Colonial times. The governor recruited them. The Hessians, though Pows, helped build houses and other buildings, some which stand even today.

Bartram went further to describe, Juglans exaltata, "is in great estimation with the gift generation of Indians, particularly, Juglans exaltata, generally called the shell-barked hickory." Bartram went further to illustrate that the Creek Indians collected hundreds of bushels of the nuts, crushed them into oily masses and strained out the woody, floating nut material, leaving the oily liquid named, (hickoy) "hiccory" milk as fresh, sweet and rich as cream". This "hiccory" (hickory) cream was used in making ready their cooking specialties "especially hominy and corn cakes.

In his book, Travels, Page 318, William Bartram found discrete nut and fruit trees growing near Wrightsville, Ga. In 1773 he found "Juglans hickory;" and the American filbert, (Hazlenut), "Corylus," and Fruit Trees; Red Mulberry "Morus rubra" American persimmon, "Diospyros;" Wild Cherry, "Prunus padus," and the Wild Plum, "Prunus indica."

Bartram, page 425, noted in Travels, that at"Manchae, on the banks of the Mississippi noted that he discovered, "under the shadow of a grand forest; the trees of the first order in magnitude and beauty, as Magnolia grandiflora, Liriodendron tulipifera, Platanus........Fraxinus excelsior," the Red mulberry, "Morus rubra, Laurus sassafras........Tilea, liquidambar styraciflua & c."

On Page 398, Bartram also identified in Alabama, Hickory Trees, "Hiccory",.... Black Walnut, Juglans nigra,....and an plentifulness of Chestnut trees on the hills with Pinus taeda and Pinus lutea. On Page 401, Bartram noticed near Mobile, Al "The top hills near large creeks afford high forests with an plentifulness of chestnut trees."

Bartram, on page 365, identified the American chestnut as being important in the building of Cherokee Indian buildings, which was quite different from the habits of the Creek Indians. Bartram wrote, "and the whole covered or roofed with the bark of the chestnut tree [American] or long broad shingles."

On Page 181 and Page l85, Bartram described finding, "Juglans cinerea", and discrete allied plant populations after crossing the Savannah River and going into Florida, "the forest consisted of orange groves, overtopped by grand Magnolias, Palms, Live Oaks, Juglans cinerea, Morus rubra, Fagus sylvatica, Tilia, and Liquidambar.

On Page 437 of Travels, William Bartram "Observed growing in a garden in Mobile, two large trees of the Juglans pecan."

William Bartram in Travels, page 83, was very impressed with the nut (acorn) of the live oak tree, that was used by wildlife and by the Indians for food. Bartram stated that the live oak tree "bears a prodigious quantity of fruit; the acorn is small, but sweet and agreeable to the taste when roasted." Bartram stated that acorns were food for animals. "The Indians secure from it a sweet oil, which they use in the cooking of hommony, rice, and they also roast it in hot embers, eating it as we do chestnuts.

Thomas Jefferson planted pecan trees, 'Carya illinoinensis,' (Illinois nuts) in his nut orchard at his beautiful home, Monticello, in Virginia; and George Washington reported in his journal that Thomas Jefferson gave him "Illinois nuts;" pecans which grew at Mount Vernon, Virginia, George Washington's home. The pecan trees grew and remain majestic in height and spread proudly, even today. He called agriculture, "the noblest of occupations."

Marketing Lessons I Learned From My Dad, the Pastor

My Dad was a Lutheran pastor. I think he was a good one in the best sense: he always wanted to help others and he was nonjudgmental. He died in 2004, and during his life he served six congregations.

His favorite church by far was his fourth one. It was the 1970s and 1980s in Mentor, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. Business people, mostly middle management, were the leaders of the congregation, and church growth (as measured by membership and budget) was a priority.

I don't think my Dad ever used the word "marketing," and he had no business training whatsoever. He never read the "business" section of the newspaper, and I doubt he ever saw a copy of the Wall Street Journal.

But during his years in Mentor, my Dad unknowingly was using sound marketing principles. They worked. An element of "luck" was involved, too, and he certainly knew it: there were big demographic shifts occurring that helped him.

The Mentor church grew tremendously: membership and budget at least tripled, and the congregation successfully executed a major building program at a time when interest rates were 18%.

From time to time I have considered the "marketing" lessons to be learned from my Dad's stint in Mentor. Here are a few.

Think carefully about how people search for your product or service. The church was founded in the early 1960s, and at that time the people who were looking for a church home would search the Yellow Pages. One of the church's founding members, Dorrie Birch, knew this, and her idea for the church's name carried the day: "Advent." Why Advent? Because it would be the first church listed under "Churches" in the Yellow Pages.

Know why people choose your product or service, and be responsive to their needs. Many of the Mentor families at that time were a religious blend, meaning the spouses didn't grow up in the same religious tradition. A common blend was: one spouse Methodist, the other Catholic. The Lutheran faith sits in the middle of the spectrum, so a lot of families chose Advent as a compromise.

With so many members who "weren't Lutheran," educational programming and worship services had to serve the needs of people who didn't know or understand Lutheran beliefs and traditions: the theory of "saved by grace"; when to sit or stand during the worship service; even the hymns that were sung.

Churches in the 1970s tended to be judgmental toward its members and unfriendly to visitors. Advent was the opposite: sympathetic to people's struggles and welcoming to new people. Most families who joined the church cited the friendliness of the members as the top reason.

Marketing is easier when you truly know and understand your customers. My Dad grew up only 15 miles from Mentor, in the working-class port town of Fairport Harbor. He was raised among factory workers, mostly first- or second-generation Finns, Hungarians, Poles, and Italians. As a pastor, he was a blue-collar guy in vestments-rough edges and no veneer. (His name was Delbert, for goodness sake!)

He felt right at home in Northeast Ohio. He loved what the people loved: cabbage rolls, ghoulash, football, great high school marching bands, fishing for perch on Lake Erie, and watching "Houlihan and Big Chuck" on TV on Friday nights. He was very comfortable in his surroundings, people responded to him, and he flourished. That hadn't really been the case in his first three churches, when he served Scandinavian congregations in agricultural communities.

Swimming in "blue ocean" is a lot more fun. Blue Ocean Strategy says that growing a business is easier when the competition is light. A "red ocean" is one that has blood in the water, with sharks fighting for the same piece of meat. My Dad definitely had a blue ocean in Mentor. His church was Lutheran in an area that historically was very strongly Catholic. As a result, there was only one other Lutheran church in the market. That's not much competition compared to the community where he had served previously, which had at least a dozen Lutheran churches.
